AND SEARCH FOR THE ORIGIN OF GOGLIA

Many years ago, I started my genealogical search.
This search led me to read the history of medieval Italy. Where did the name
Goglia originate? I found that areas of Longobardi settlements, the name Goglia
have established a presence.
The Lombards were a Viking tribe from Denmark that settled in the area of
Hamburg before moving south. They inhabited the Roman province of Pannonia.
They invaded Italy in the year 568.
The Duchy
of Friuli was the first to be established. The first duke was Gisulf
I. The duchy was important in preventing the invasion of Slavic people
into Italy. This duchy included Istria.
Gisulf also allied with the Avars to make war on Istria.
In 570 the Lombards set up their kingdom in Pavia with duchies in Spoleto
and Benevento.
Zotto was the military leader
of the Lombards in the
Mezzogiorno. He is generally considered the founder of the Duchy
of Benevento in 571 and its first duke. He was relative of Gisulf. The
son's of Gisulf II became rulers of Benevento.
Benevento
expanded the Duchy to Salerno. When Benevento
and Salerno
split, they became principalities.
Today, the name Goglia is found in these 3 areas of Italy/Istria, Croatia.
